Faithful Stewards
Have you ever heard from your mom that if you borrow anything, you have to take good care of it and return in the condition you found or in even better condition than you found it?
As a mom I try to teach my, now teenagers, children that when someone lends us anything it is very important that we look after the clothes, shoes, vehicle, whatever you choose to borrower, with care. It is important that we preserve it and many times, that we would pay attention to it more than we do our own things. I try and teach them that we have to be good stewards.
I have been going to church on regular basis since I was a little kid, it is part of my life, it is where I find community and connect with God, however it wasn’t until my late 20’s that I learned what being a good steward meant. That it means a lot more than just taking good care of something, than respecting people’s properties or belongings. Being a good steward is living a life like everything you “own” or “have” it is not yours, but God’s.
This roof over my head it is not mine or my husband’s, it is God’s. The car I drive, not mine, it’s God’s, the clothes I wear, the shoes, even the kids I “have”, you guessed it… God’s. Now, saying it and acknowledging that everything is His, not mine, is one thing, but living it is a whole `nother story. You see, I can say all day long that my house is God’s and decide to sell it in a blink of an eye, without even asking Him if this is a good decision. I rarely go to a store and say: Ok God, what should I buy today? Nope, I find what I like, I try it and I buy it.
Don’t even get me started with “my” kids. I make decisions about them “all the doo-dah day”, the important ones I make with my husband, but the “can I eat this piece of cake now” kind of decision I make in a split second and I really don’t weigh in what God wants for them, after all, mothers know best, right? Wrong!
Yes, we have been chosen to nurture and provide many things to our kids that are encrypted in our DNA, we have this need to protect them at all times, we must make sure they eat, sleep, shower, play. We do it for so long that we think it is our decision, that it is up to us, that we can just carry on with the plans we have for them. But guess what, girlfriend? It isn’t. We cannot foresee the future, we cannot make their decisions forever and, above all, we cannot just be there for them until the day they die. We simply can’t. But God can, He actually does and He is clear about his sovereignty and omnipresence, He is also clear that children are heritage from Him to us (Psalms 127:3), that He entrusted them to us, not that they are ours, for He has sons and daughters only, not grandbabies.
So yes, being a steward is hard, being a faithful steward is even harder, but we must, if we want to follow Jesus. Think of it this way: if all you “have” it is really His, then you can ask Him and of Him anything you would like. You can ask Him before you make a purchase if this is the best way to spend the money He entrusted you. You can ask Him for a raise because Amazon is not going away anytime soon, you can ask Him for a better job for your husband, because, after all you are stewards together and you need him to be home earlier for dinner. You see, all of these questions will not only make your life a lot easier but it will take the pressure off. The pressure of doing it all, of being the perfect wife, mom, daughter. The pressure of having the better-looking house, the pressure of paying the bills, IT IS ALL HIS!
I am preaching to the choir here, but if we learn to ask before we make any decision, I am sure that God will indeed give us the desires of our hearts (Psalms 37:4), not because we want Him to, but because our desires will align with His and His desires for us will became ours as well. We know that whatever He has for us is better, however, in our very limited thinking, we can’t accept His ways, we are ignorant to it, we do not know what the next step will be and we get frustrated, because we want to control our situation. But hear me out, sister, His ways will always be better and nothing He ever gives us is ours.
The biggest gift God could ever give us, He already did. He gave his only son to provide salvation because He loves us so (John 3:16). I know it is really hard to trust and not take the wheel back when we think He is not listening or taking too long for our liking. But we must try, we must practice asking Him before we do anything, because He does have a plan for our lives, to prosper and not harm and to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
Let’s make a plan this week to be better stewards of what God have entrusted us. Who’s with me? I hope you raised your hand and I pray you will experience something new and refreshing while seeking Him and being intentional on the pursue of His will for your life and those around you.
